St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church
Christchurch, New Zealand

There are few names of places that have captured my imagination more than the name of the city in which this little church resides: Christchurch, New Zealand.

It was interesting to discover that the name is taken from Christ Church in Oxford - the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of Oxford in England (Church of England). It is the only college in the world that is also a Cathedral.

The Maori name for this gorgeous location was Otautahi.
On July 31, 1856 Christchurch became a city by Royal Charter.
In June of 1949 the congregation of the St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church had its beginning when the faithful would meet for services aboard a ship.
In 1962 St. Nicholas' grounds were consecrated.
And later...

Please visit the church's website to learn more and if you are in the vicinity... to stop by for a service! I will if ever I am blessed to travel to Christchurch, New Zealand!
I also recommend Christchurchdailyphoto and Take Life One Day at a Time.

Hi! Great post, as always :)
I just received a confirmation email that my copy of your new book, The Faith of St. Nick, was dispatched to me from amazon.co.uk!! Greatly looking forward to reading it :)
Hopefully a survivor of the earthquake in that town.Lovely area to visit.
What a wonderful history of this old, pretty church. :)

Ann you always inspire me with your fantastic research!
What a lovely spot. Back in the mid to late 70s, I had friends who were from Christchurch, NZ who were living in my native Montreal for a few years. They eventually moved back there to raise their family. I can totally see why.
GOOD MORNING DEAR ANN!!!!
My husband who is a Christian History prof at a local university brought home a fabulous DVD series narrated by Diarmaid McCullough....it was a splendid overview of the history of Christianity in the Middle East to Europe, the Americas and Africa. I learned SO MUCH about the Greek and Russian Orthodox churches and it shed new light on MY FAITH...I appreciate your consistent research on finding what some might think as vestiges of our faith, when in fact, they remain to be vibrant reminders of the power of CHRIST.
And yes dearest, I think I do SOAR at least in my heart, when I write; I long for my words to speak to higher levels of ability. Many blessings, Anita
I have visited Oxford England often. Perhaps I'll look out for Christchurch next time I'm there.
Thank you for a wonderful post.
God bless.
