St. Nicholas' Naval Cathedral

This beautiful Baroque cathedral was consecrated in 1760 before Empress Elizabeth. Sailors built the first church at this site - a wooden structure - during the time of Peter the Great. They dedicated it, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

Looking at these photos it's possible to imagine that St. Sophia's in Constantinople had to have looked somewhat similar when Prince Vladimir's envoys reported back to him in AD 987 that they had found the true religion..and brought Christianity to Russia. "We knew not whether we were in heaven or on earth...We only know that God dwells there among the people, and their service is fairer than the ceremonies of other nations."
Interestingly enough, St. Nicholas' Cathedral was one of the few churches that was not closed during the Soviet era... I guess not even an atheistic government wanted to chance sending their ships out without the blessing and protection of St. Nicholas!

Hi Ann! Loving that first image with the snow and blue of the church, amazing! We're getting ready for the 2nd heatwave of the summer here with 5+ days ahead of over 90 degrees and humid to boot! Like I say, that first image is my favorite. :)

That winter scene is absolutely gorgeous, but the interior photos are pretty spectacular as well. This is a beautiful cathedral. It's interesting that it wasn't closed by the Soviets.
