Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas
Joensuu, Finland

This lovely church dedicated to St. Nicholas was built in 1887. The city itself was founded in 1848. It was a city of commerce and by the end of the 19th c it was one of the largest harbor cities in Finland (hence the reason why there is a church dedicated to St. Nicholas!). Today it is also a university city. Joensuu is often referred to as the Forest Capital of Europe. Looking at the above photo, one can see why.

The icons were written in St. Petersburg, Russian during the late 1880s.
Services, in this lovely old church, are still offered each Saturday and Sunday.

Hello dear Ann,
I am still often popping in although I don't always leave a message. Beautiful church, love my journey all over the world.

Gorgeous church. This has to be one of my architectural favourites xx
Love this wood built church it is gorgeous. Diane
I love this Church. Amazing to think that it is built of wood. The interior is beautiful. I often wonder how many people still attend Services in all these Churches that you find for us.
It was well built to withstand all the elements. Many wood buildings around here have met up with ruin or replacement.
Very lovely. Another reason to make that long desired trip to Finland. :)
What a gorgeous church that is. I would not have guessed that it was that old by the pictures.
What a beautiful church...the roof line and roof are amazing....
Hugs Madi and Mom
Another beautiful church. Your knowledge and research amaze me.
Ann, I have a second motive for popping in. Did your sweet kitty, Edward, have megacolon? I have a friend who just posted on facebook that her cat has this, and she is looking for people who also have kitties who have had it, for advice and, I think, comfort. I'm going to send you to your blog. Maybe you can help? So, don't be surprised if someone you don't know pops up here asking about Edward's story.
What a wonderful building and of wood too, makes it very special.
gorgeous Ann! i love the roof. thanks for all the lovely photos and stories you continue to bring. blessings to you! xo
Oh my, what a beautiful church. Anything built from wood has a special attraction and 'vibe' for me. Just gorgeous.

Calling by as you suggested because I would be delighted to follow back, thankyou for suggesting your blog to me and becoming a follower over on News From Italy. I am not a fan of the commercial side of Christmas, but having a browse around I think I will find your blog fascinating.
I just tried to send you an email but was told your email address was an error even though it is one I took from this blog!
No need to publish this on blog, but here is the message.
Hi there Ann
You have just become my latest follower which is lovely. Thankyou for showing your appreciation by leaving me a comment on the sunset skies post. Mother Nature has certainly provided us with some stunningly beautiful sunset skies here recently.
I have now visited your site which looks fascinating and have become a follower as I love to get to know my readers.
I did not have time to check if you have already featured the church I married in?

That sure is a beautiful church. And all built out of wood. That would be great fun to see in person. Take care and have one heck of a day.

Oh sweet Anne,
It is so nice to see you again! WHAT AN INTERESTING STRUCTURE this is! I know nothing of Finland other than there is a history of nomadic peoples from Asia having been there. I have meet some people here in Minnesota from Finnish heritage and there is an Asian influence in appearance....SO INTERESTING!!!!!
Keep well dearest and I do hope all is fine with you...OH! HOW IS EDWARD???? Anita
What a beautiful church. I love the green color on the domes. Very pretty!
