St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral

Although something about each and every church named in St. Nicholas' honor that I've published touches me, I must admit that this one does in three very special ways.
First, a personal reason - once upon a time and long ago I lived in Seattle!
Beautiful Seattle

I loved the city and its environs - truly, one of the most beautiful places on earth. My family often celebrated our birthdays at the revolving Space Needle restaurant.
Second, a modern day saint, John of Shanghai and San Francisco, often visited this cathedral and in fact, it is where he reposed July 2 of 1966.

Third, when this church was dedicated to Nicholas of Myra on December 19, 1937 it was also "designated as a memorial to the martyred Tsar Nicholas II, his Royal Family and all the Russian soldiers and people who died defending their faith, tsar and country."(information from the Cathedral's wonderful website).

In this day and age when the sacrifice of 20th c. Christians is so often forgotten it is nice to know that at least these people - who were executed on July 17, 1918 by orders of Lenin and Sverdlov - are not. It gives one pause to know that more Christians died for their faith in the 20th century than in all the other centuries put together... After this imperial family was killed wars seemed to sweep the entire world...

What a lovely cathedral! Amazing how one, single place can have such importance and for so many various and diverse reasons. Russian churches are always beautiful, aren't they? So cool that you used to live in Seattle :)
What a gloriously beautiful Cathedral! Wow! And, in such a beautiful city. Thank you so much for sharing!
Oh yes! THAT LAST PHOTO is indeed like a post card!
YOU CAN SPOT a St. Nicholas church ANYWHERE DEAREST!!!!

I love those towers. What a fun visit, the last photo was nice with the spring blooms in it.
That really is one of the best St Nicholas Churches that you have posted about, Ann. It really is beautiful. I Loved the film, Sleepless in Seattle (that's nothing to do with your post, I know. Hee Hee, but how lovely that you lived there at one time).
What a beautiful place. It seems to radiate peace.
How truly beautiful Ann! I love the last picture especially but all are simply wonderful. I always enjoy the history and stories you include about each church. That gives so much depth and fascination to the photos.
Have you visited all of these incredible places? *daydreaming* :)
Have a lovely day!

thanks for sharing pictures of the cathedral of the town you lived in:)
Even though I live about an hour south of Seattle, and have worshiped in Seattle, I have not been to St. Nicholas.
Someday!
Hi Ann, What a neat "St. Nicholas" Church. I've never been to Seattle--but my son has and says that it is a gorgeous city... That last picture does look like an Easter card... Thanks for sharing such great info.
Hugs,
Betsy

Hello, Ann! How perfect that I should make my way back here just in time for your post on the St. Nicholas Cathedral in Seattle.
I'm sure I've driven by it but you've inspired me to look into it further.
And I'm so glad that you loved your time in Seattle. I must agree about it being one of the most beautiful places on earth. No matter where I travel I'm always delighted to come home here.
As always, I've learned something fascinating here.
I hope you are well and have had a lovely summer.

So sorry to be absent for so long Ann! Hope you are okay?
Such a lovely church with the typically Russian pinnacles. And good to know that the murdered Russian family are not forgotten. Such beautiful looking girls and little boy and to die in such a horrific manner.
What a beautiful post.. thank you for sharing. Have a wonderful Sunday!
