St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral, New York City, USA

This is a beautiful cathedral with an amazing history. Its story opens during the final decade of the 1800s with over 300 devout from Russia knowing that they could no longer continue to meet in rented rooms, chose a location for a church building in what was then a modest neighborhood in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Czar Nicholas II made the first donation towards the church's construction in 1901... the same emperor who, along with his entire family, was later murdered in 1918. Problems came to this cathedral in the 1920s when the atheistic power then holding Russia in its iron grip wanted to control this cathedral and the 3 million dollars worth of property owned by the Russian Orthodox Church in the USA. The "Cold War" continued a period of strain.This is all part of its history now. In 1973 St. Nicholas Cathedral was designated a Landmark.
Sunday, November 16, 2003, was a grand date in the life of this historic church. Many hierarchs were on hand to celebrate the Divine Liturgy marking the 100th anniversary of the Cathedral and its rededication. Metropolitan Kirill wrote upon the occation of its rededication, "Through the prayerful intercession of St. Nicholas the Cathedral of New York has hold its ground [through the years] and is embodying the implementation of the plans of its holy founders."

Another church with a different style but this is I presume typical of Russian style. It is quite beautiful and although not very old, old enough to have a interesting history. Diane

I sure hope that Edward is feeling better. I read the most amazing news story the other night about cats and how attached they become to their female owners...it was so touching and a new study revealed that they are like babies who form such an attachment to their mothers. I thought you would love hearing about that.

Oh, that's just such a beautiful old church! Actually, when I lived in N.Y.C. I used to walk past this very church every day and always loved looking at it. It's such a wonderful and meaningful legacy for the Czar Nicholas II to have contributed to! Really stunning :)
