I know it's just a week until Christmas Eve and most of us don't want to think about anything except our joyful celebrations coming up but... the St. Nicholas Charity that I am highlighting this week, St. Nicholas Hospice, forces us to remember that there are a great deal of hurting people in the world, people who might not have loved ones with them this year or who know that most likely, they won't be celebrating the following Christmas with a loved one...
Well, in one lovely corner of England - West Suffolk and Thetford - there is a beautiful organization of people - neighbors - whose aim is to not only to offer comfort and hands-on help to those who are facing life's ultimate challenge - the end of physical life on earth - but to help their loved ones as well. This isn't something offered to the community only at Christmas time but following in the spirit of St. Nicholas's life - all year long!

The range of help offered by this organization is beautiful. For instance, in the new, Neighbours Scheme, a volunteer - a neighbor - will come to a family's home and do something as simple, but loving, as walk a dog, mow a lawn, or deliver medication. I remember when my son was very sick many years ago, just wishing I had the privilege - yes, I said privilege! - to just go to the sink and wash my dishes. Thankfully a neighbor came in and helped me there or else I think that sink full of dishes would have been the proverbial straw that would have done me in - not the nights spent in the hospital but the dishes in the sink! The little, but vital, day to day activities can often be the ones that overwhelm when one is sick or a loved one is. St. Nicholas Hospice makes sure a neighbor, one hitherto a stranger even, is on hand! Honestly, to have St. Nicholas Hospice spread to all communities around the world would make for a much better world.

We are still around by the way. Seth just has to go back and forth to his dad's.

It sounds like a wonderful organization; one of the things I pray for people who are going through tough times of sickness/illness is that there will be people that come in and help them with simple chores like dishes, etc. Good this hospice provides such services; thanks for highlighting it!

I so admire and simply am awestruck by the wonderful work people like these do. We have an amazing Hospice here in Ballarat where I live, and I can't say enough about the support and loving care they give families and their loved ones. Truly gifted people.

What a crazy Saturday I had; I worked so hard on my Nowhere post and hardly anyone is around....I was so tired yesterday that I just wept. I guess people are really too busy to visit, as I found myself just unable to visit everyone. Hospice is a blessing to many folks. I have done some private hospice myself, and with one case, found out that even death can be beautiful!
Hospice is wonderful indeed. They were amazing when my Dad was sick, and so kind and caring. I don't know how we could have gone thru such a hard time without them. I think they all deserve to be saints:)!
